While I agree that hard driving caused more engine wear (thermal stress, etc.), it's all relative. Baby the engine and it may last 300,000 miles, driving it hard alot may cut it's life to 250,000. That is a far cry from having an internal failure at 50,000 miles. If proper maintenance was done and good gas utilized, that sort of failure is a defect. Running the engine to the redline is not abuse. Also, pistons are not wear items!
