The second law of thermodynamics, the degradation of energy principle is my favorite. It basically means things are running down, wearing out. The higher the energy level and complexity of a system, the stronger the pull of forces trying to destroy the system. A rock sitting on the ground will not degrade or change much at all over thousands of years. The potential energy of the rock is nearly zero.
A Viggen cruising down the highway has massive amounts of energy and high-order complexity. Pure metalic elements like aluminum are being attacked - trying to be convinced to merge and mingle with other atoms from oxygen, iron, hydrogen, etc. to form a worthless blob. The Viggen's human occupants need food, water and air - just a feeble attempt to maintain that last spark of existence, only to be snuffed out in an instant from a heart attack or a car wreck.
Anyway, the higher you rev your engine, the greater the energy involved and the greater the downward pull to total destruction. If the Viggen engine would fly apart at 8,000RPM then the forces at 6,000RPM are still something to write home about. 5,000-5,500RPM is the shift point I aim for when I really want to scoot. Normally, 4,000RPM. The higher you are, the harder you fall, so I've heard...
