Doubtful the body shop changed your oil. Was it noted on the repair bill? Does the body shop do both body work and basic mechanical repair like oil & lube?

Anyway, it's odd that neither you nor your wife can remember when the oil was last changed and you've been driving the car for months since then but you never checked the oil even level once? C'mon. You're supposed to do that regularly as part of owner's basic maintenance. I can just see you in a fight with a body shop over this.

Find a decent indy and get the engine noise diagnosed.
