Nicholas,
I don't think EGD was necessarily saying it was ALL your fault, and by the way, neither am I, but there are issues here that may hinder any legal case against Iffy.
I personally believe that they faulted in their performance to properly complete the oil change, but the underlying issue is that proper owner maintenance was not performed in not checking the oil level at a reasonable interval. In court, it doesn't matter who was responsible to check the oil, you or your wife, as it is a joint asset (I am assuming you were married at the time the car was purchased - if it was an asset of yours prior to the marriage, then it depends on how your State looks at it.)
Where it is possibly there fault for failing to perform initially, the catastrophic failure may be considered your fault as the event itself could have been avoided had you/your wife performed what is called for in the owner's manual. The fact that the failure did not occur until some 8 months and 5K miles after the service can show that at least at the time of the service, there was sufficient oil in the engine to not cause a failure - it's not like you drove out of there and the engine blew a block down the street (I'm speaking of when you or your wife drove out of Iffy).
I honestly hope you get something out of it. To me, they should own up to their mistakes, BUT, I think you're going to have a tough time of it if it has to go to court.
