Where the most tread is can matter in limited traction situations, especially when cornering and braking hard at the same time. But in general, tire stores and Tire Rack are more concerned with potential liability that what really makes sense.

With snow tires, FWD cars should have snows all around as the difference in traction between normal tires and snows is so great and snow and ice offer such limited traction. But for normal use, I have put the tires with better tread on the front for the past 30+ years of driving FWD cars. I often corner fairly aggressively, too, and have had zero issues.

However, put the same make, size and model of tire at both ends of the car, regardless of how much tread is on the tires.
