Some of this is about just how great the difference is between front and rear. I always buy tires in sets of 4, and I'm pretty good about rotating them, so my tires wear pretty evenly. But at 5K on new set, I'm rotating them to the rear and putting the better tires on the front. But according to the "best tires on the back" logic, this is the wrong thing to do. I should just wear out the fronts to keep the thicker rubber on the back
OTOH, if it was 2 tires with say 30K on them and 2 new tires, I'd still put the good ones on the front. They'll wear faster than the worn ones on the back, and I'll have better traction with the wheels that power, steer and do most of the braking. But a tire store won't. IMHO they are really covering their butts, and I'll admit that it's perhaps with some justification assuming certain driving conditions.
If I could only afford two tires, I sure would want the good ones up front if I have to drive on a freeway in heavy rain and not be hydroplaning down the road. Or if I choose not to use snow tires to take on an occasional light snowfall, I'd rather have tires with some decent tread up front.
Over to you, Mike. <grin>
