recent trends seem to indicate the hatch is on the way back. Not only has Saab reintroduced the concept in the 9-2, it is being used by several other mfg's. I've even seen ads that target the hatch's ability to hold more cargo, but still be a car...
The versatility of a vehicle can override many factors that might otherwise keep you from buying one. All one has to do is to look at the SUV craze... very inefficient vehicles that are not very stable and do very poorly in crashes... yet people buy them in droves.
The arguement that the hatch makes the car weak don;t float, as similar factors make tons of other cars weak as well.
