>recent trends seem to indicate the hatch is on the way back.
Oh? And could you offer some details to prove that? (Mercedes is a fluke... I'll bet money that it won't last. It's certainly not a big seller or "critical" to Mercedes survival)
>I've even seen ads that target the hatch's ability to hold more cargo, but still be a car...
That's TOTALLY lost on most people. Basically, Americans buy waaaay bigger vehicles than they need. "Got a baby coming... Better go buy a Suburban!"
>The arguement that the hatch makes the car weak don't float
Sorry... That's just totally ignoring the laws of physics. If you cut the roof off a car to get a convertible you get a really floppy chassis. If you cut a large hole in the back (for a "hatchback") you likewise ruin the structural rigidity. Yeah, I know you can add cross-bracing in the hatch area like a rally car to stiffen the chassis but that kinda ruins the "utility"!
Basically it comes down to this... Saab would NOT have a respectable and competitive SPORT SEDAN (which a lot of people want) if it had five doors. The sales numbers totally back up Saab's decision... So what that they lost a few sales to whining "diehards" (some of whom haven't bought a new Saab in years). They make it up with NEW customers...
