A future Saab owner(Maybe!)

Hello all! I didn't really know where to post this...but here goes!
My wife and I have currently started looking at used 9-5 wagons(2001 or newer)and are also considering Volvo's V70 wagons. So far, she's driven the 2001 V70 2.4...and I've driven the 2001 Saab 2.3T wagon. We have an Accord wagon now, which we like, but because she drive's it alot more than I do (and often has our son in it ) she wants to get a much safer car.
What can all of you tell me about the 9-5 wagons?? What things should I look for?? I definately want to get a certified car for peace of mind.
This will also be our first "european car", having owned asian imports, mostly. I should also tell you, we line in New England AND have a large dog!!
How do you think the Saabs stack up against the Volvo's, safety wise??
How about reliability? Cost per mile, etc??
Any and all comments appreciated!!
Thanks!
