I've had 5 Volvos and just bought a Saab. My oldest kid's now in college and the other in highschool. Volvo's emphasis on safety is well known, but I fault that as a cop-out for not figuring out how to engineer brakes where the calipers release until the last year or two. Seriously - Volvos run through brake pads faster than most cars run through wiper fluid. But this is supposed to fixed now. We have a C70 now and all 4 of us drive it - and with AWD it's great in the snow. BUT my kids made it clear that if I bought another Volvo they'd shoot me and my wife. Yet they are good cars and getting better - though if you check the websites there are still quality complaints. I'd go for newer rather than older though (and I bought 3 of them old) just to avoid the brake pad design flaws. Oh, and they have a cartel that manages price competition for both parts and new cars....which my mechanic - and just about any other - will confirm.

So when it came time to finally replace my sedan (not a volvo), I looked at Volvo, Audi and Saab. Stats favored Saab on price, reliability, and "dealer experience". Test drove a Saab and skipped the others. Great driving car. Car is supposed to go in the snow and get decent mileage. I'm still on my 1st gas tank, so I'm not able to rate this...and winter snow is pretty much in the past. Don't have the wagon, but vote for the car in general.....

But then what'd you expect on a Saab website? Volvo website thread on "...is quality declining...." put me off there. My kids were pulling for the Saab, and you already know their opinion of the Volvo...without the unprintable adjectives. Saab folks are fanatics. But with it being your wife's car.....if you're like me, you get a vote, but maybe not only one, right? What's the dog want to drive?
