"How do you think the Saabs stack up against the Volvo's..." well, I'll bet you could stack at least five Volvos on top of a 9-5 and still survive! Seriously, the 9-5 is one of the safest vehicles ever tested by European insurers. In general, Saabs have a lengthy history of engineering which places safety at the front end of the design process. I'm surprised you're asking this question because I always thought it was pretty much common knowledge, even outside the TSN community, that Saabs were a very safe automobile. My first Saab was a 99 and it sacrificed itself when I was broadsided by someone, in a huge Buick, who failed to stop at a stop sign. I walked away from a direct hit to the middle-side of the vehicle without a scratch (had to crawl out the passenger window!).
I can't give a cost/mile figure, but it's my opinion that if the vehicle is properly maintained (frequent synthetic oil changes, frequent change of all the other mechanical fluids: brake, cooling, etc) then it is as reliable as any Volvo, and is, essentially, a very reliable marque.
