i have a volvo 850 wagon and saab sedan. I would say they are very comparable in regards to safety--both extremely safe. and probably very comparable in cost of ownership as well. the saab your're after is more fun to drive and has pleeeeeeeenty of dog room. my saab is cheaper to insure than my volvo--perhaps safer, perhaps cheaper to repair, perhaps statistically less likely to be in an accident. Check with your Insurance. The Volvo has optional rear facing 3rd seat, which my wife and i actually get some use out of it. I don't think this is available on the Saab. I don't think you can make a bad decision here. get the car you like and want...and can get the best deal on.
good luck.
