Hi:
I read recently that the 9-5 was rated safest car in sweden for a couple years in a row...thats saying something.
I've never owned a volvo but have spent more time driving a V70 (rental) then I have in my new saab wagon (it's only a few weeks old). Both cars are very safe. Volvo has a quality interior, but performance wise, not much to write about.
The saab has a 'fun factor' in the driving experience that you won't find in the volvo.
Also, here's a good article on saab safetly features
