The public perception of Volvos being so safe is partly fueled by a good safety record and partly by great advertising. Saab has not been good with advertising, so most people don't know that Saabs have pretty much consistently rated higher than Volvos in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Saab 9000 was one of the safest cars made. IIRC, for the late 1980's, the 9000 was surpassed by the biggest Mercedes and nothing else.
Active safety is far superior in Saabs. IMHO, Volvos handle poorly. They tend to wallow too much for me. So accident avoidance is not going to be that great. I'm on my fourth Saab, third 9000, and I can't conceive of a better all-around car.
