That 1984 C900 I mentioned in my other post is sitting outside, awaiting a couple of weekend's worth of work. Then it goes to my soon-to-be-16 daughter. I can't imagine many other cars I could do that with after 20 years and 170K miles. In six or seven more years, my 9000 will probably go to the next kid in line or the to the older one when she needs a car after college.
Look at the big picture. I'm of the opinion that it is cheaper overall to buy a durable car that costs more to maintain that it is to buy a less durable car that costs less to own but needs to be replaced more often. Cars ain't cheap, no matter how you cut it.
Then again, it depends on whether you want something fun to drive and interesting or an appliance. If you are of the appliance persuasion, go buy a Toyota or Honda, cuz you'll be happier. Bored while driving, maybe, but happier.
Any high-end Euro car---Saab, Audi, Volvo, BMW, or Mercedes will cost more to run than a domestic or Japanese car. But the value goes beyond the price and operating cost.
