NewProf,
Suggest you look through the mechanics listing below. See if a mechanic is close to where you live and then see if you can get them to chat. You might mention that you'r interested in getting a used saab and want to know what the average yearly service bill is like. The mechanics on the listing are posted because people on saabnet have been happy with their work. For comparison's sake you might want to compare the hourly labor rate at said mechanic with that of the local saab dealer.
Would also suggest that you drive several before making any offers and also get the one you want checked out (ie "What will need to be fixed in the next year?") before buying - this would probably be the easiest way to get a feel for whether or not you like your local saab mechanic. This should cost less that $100 and will certainly strengthen your bargaining position (in general there is not high demand for used saabs).
By the way, most simple saab repairs (flushing coolant, changing waterpump, replacing belts, replacing sparkplugs, replacing brakes...) can be easily accomplished in a Saturday afternoon.
