I believe most of the posts below give a pretty good picture of ownership exp and maintenance costs. However I think you should also look into how you plan on using your car. Will you have a short commute? Do you plan on traveling some longer distances? Do you have a back up vehicle at your disposal? Having an older car (anything older than 10 years) can be a great experience but you do have to factor in posssible downtime.
I currently own a 86 Saab and 83 BMW and they are both reliable, fun to drive vehicles in which I take pride in. Of course I have chunked down some repair bills on both of these cars and have done some work myself but I also don't have a monthly car payment, always have a backup car and have even rented a car for longer travels.
