If there's a competent independent, yes, else no

It boils down to whether you have a competent indie, and how fast you get to the point of no return, or, as my Geo dealer said, "repair exceeds value of vehicle". A 92 9000 should be around 2-3 grand, and pouring $1k a year on a car of that vintage is not what I would call a good idea.
12 years, even at low miles per year, still would look like 150k miles minimum. You could be the eternal optimist and consider that you could get 50 k miles out of it, but in practice, if the tranny explodes in 3 k miles you're done.
There's also the issue of your driving patterns, i.e. do you want to take long trips, you have a long commute, etc? There are all kinds of issues to consider from that angle as well.
