My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Highlands, North Carolina (about 30 minutes southwest of Asheville). Camping, hiking, fishing, rafting, and tubing are some of the outdoor activities available and there is a small theatre in town that showcases excellent plays and musicals with B'way caliber talent. Great shopping town with some of the best restaurants I've ever eaten in (I'm from New Orleans and that's saying something), and the locals are friendly and welcoming. It was sooo enjoyable and relaxing Shelley and I now return every other year for a week or two. Highlands is truly a hidden jewel.
That being said, if you can get the right timeshare week in Paris... go for it! What you'll save in lodging expense you can spend on airfare. IMHO, Paris is by far the most romantic city in the world and a honeymoon spent there will be a forever memory. Currency exchange is a non-issue when you use plastic, a US passport is good for ten years, and foreign travel definitely makes you wiser for the understanding of other cultures you will acquire. Paris is compact, easily walked, and the Metro will get you wherever you do not want to walk to. The food at any Bistro is fabulous, the art museums the finest in the world.... oh, I could go on and on. A Parisian honeymoon can't be beat. Or you could try Italy. I'm a fan of Rick Steves travel guides and his philosophy of "get to know the locals" style of travel. Steves makes travel easy and fun.
If Paris is not your "cup of tea" I'd still recommend taking advantage of your fiance's grandparents wonderful gift. Travel to some wonderfully exotic place that you will always remember. You will have plenty of opportunities to see the good ol' USA, but free lodging means you can spend a little more on airfare. I agree with the comments about Costa Rica, especially wonderful is the Osa Peninsula.
