I lived in Michigan when the deposit first went into effect. It was amazing how quickly the trash on the sides of roads and highway medians disappeared. People were collecting the bottles and cans that others threw away to collect the deposit money. In literally a year the roads and highways were much cleaner.
I now live in Philadelphia and have for several years. Here we have a recycling program and it works well. From a personal labor standpoint it's not a hassle. Every week I take out a sometimes overloaded [with beer bottles] bucket to the curb and it gets recycled. Personally neither is more or less complicated to me. However, I see some advantages of the deposit method over direct recycling.
1. It promotes recyling over just throwing the cans or bottles away or on the street.
2. It puts the financial burden on the corporations and not directly on the tax payers. A municipal recycling program costs tax dollars.
3. If bottles or cans are thrown on the street, people tend to collect them to get the deposit thus, creating less trash on the street.
The whole thing deposit thing reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Newman and Kramer use a mail truck to take a load of cans and bottles to Michigan for the deposit.
