Like Bert, I'm in Maine also. We can take any bottle or can to any place. Most people either take their returnables in for money or give them away to community group fundraisers. People pick them up off the roadside for money when they blow out of pickup trucks. Very few get actually thrown away.
If there were something similar for McDonalds' bags, cigarette butts, and styrofoam coffee cups, there would be NO litter to be found anywhere.
Here, technically, any place that sells the soda/beer/water must accept the returnables and provide the deposit. However, there are privately owned "redemption centers" that get the most business. You bring boxes or bags or trucks full of cans and bottles, they count them and give you cash on the spot. I usually wait till I have a half dozen grocery bags of cans in my garage before I go. I go there after I go to the dump.
It's also a popular method of funraising for community groups and kids groups and teams. I did a lot of this as a kid, and the people with lots of wine/vodka/kahlua bottles were the best places for kids to stop since you get 15c for those instead of 5c for soda/beer/water bottles.
We also have regular trash recycling. No deposit for other #2 plastic like milk bottles, power steering fluid bottles, etc... Recycle paper, cardboard, metal, #2 plastic, glass, packing material, seperately from trash. It's expensive for towns to get rid of trash, so local communities and the state promote recycling as a method of reducing tax burden in addition to the typically well known environmental benefits of recycling.
