My experience on I-5 from SF to LA proves that pickups and SUV's only use the left lane. Some go at breakneck speeds, some go 20 under when it's foggy. The just won't leave that lane. I've given up on "don't pass on the right" rule after waiting in line behind them, tailgating, turning on my left blinker (euro trick, americans have never seen this one), or blinking my brights. I don't do ALL of these things to a driver, perhaps just one. When they don't get the hint, I pass on the right and go on my merry way.

Last night I had one pickup driver going 60 in a 70 in front of me. He slammed on the brakes down to 45 or 50, and I wasn't even close to him. I passed on the right and then was up to 95-100 in no time. No need for the idiot to follow me, so i got outta there, then calmly took my place in the right lane with the cruise control on.

In my california experience, Chevy pickups and Ford SUV owners seem to think they should be NASCAR drivers. Sometimes you'll see a sweet euro ride driving like they're on the autobahn (MB AMG's and the like), but they're not obnoxious, just fast.

Also, if you see a 90's Civic with unpainted aftermarket body panel modifications, watch out. That's proabably a pimple faced 17 year old going 95MPH, but he doesn't know how to drive well, especially at speed. Steer clear.

Randy
