is Eiron and Schu the same person? gorper is from Seattle? me too.
Anyway, what's in your backpack? I commute using my bike in warmer/drier season. (24 inche bike - easy to bunny hop and small enough to go anywhere including between cars:)
I don't use rear view mirror, but if you got yours hanging from your helmet, you can attache that to your handle and that will probably take away your blind spot issue. (I also don't wear helmets - which just became illegal last summer in Seattle)
As far as sweats, you just need to wear the right shirt and tough it out (maybe that's why you want to stay away from your backpack?) and if you get good backpack for activities, you can stick the "Camelbak" and drink water as you pedal:) I like DaKine backpacks, but I know many ski/snowboard backpacks have a built in pouch for "Camelbak" and a clip for the tube. I'm sure it's not just limited to ski/snowboard pack that has this feature.
I use "SAAB" sash(?) bag that I got at SOC '04 at Crystal Mt. It's one of those that have one strap that goes across your chest and bag hangs diagnally on your back. But I don't carry too much stuff in that bag...
I also like the bag being with me, so if/when I stopped at stores or something, I can just chain my bike and go. I see a lot of people with bags hanging from their bike (front and back), but never looked at it closely.
If those bags are easy to remove so that you can take it where ever you want (especially work), it may be worth it, but for me, I can't have stuff hanging/dangling from my bike as I like to bunny hop on to the curves.
