Done both...lots! (a bit long) Posted by ChuckD [Email] (#2127) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ChuckD) on Wed, 12 Jan 2005 11:15:14 In Reply to: OT: Bicycle saddle bags vs backpacks, Eiron, Tue, 11 Jan 2005 15:21:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Having done several extended bike tours, two over 1000 miles each, I can well appreciate having panniers carrying the weight low and having your back clear and unrestrained. But...
Having also been a USCF competitor for 6 years, and doing much of my training going to and from work, I can speak for the benefits of a backpack as well.
And that's my preference. As has been stated, it gives you more mobility. I always found commuting a time when I needed to be ultra-alert and ready to take evasive action at any moment (my commutes started rural and passed thru urban). Inevitably my mood was much different than the leisurely cruises I took around the country as a tourist. Much more wired, and much more demanding of the bike.
Maybe you need to reassess your backpack?
I found it best to extend the shoulderstraps as far as they'd go to keep the bag as low on my back as possible. I believe this also helped with aerodynamics. I also distributed the items in the bag as flatly as possible using the full width of the pack to keep everything close to your own CG. I used natural fiber backpacks, knapsacks really. And I'd occasionally sit up to stretch and stick my fist between the pack and myself to let some air thru.
Just some fond memories I thought'd be useful.

PS to Schu: That'd be me in the dark and snow, but twenty years ago. Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow kept me from riding. I warmly remember one morning turning on my walkman and hearing the DJ say it was -10F, and I had a 17 mile bike commute ahead of me! Loved every minute of it tho.
