I guess one way the lowered pack postion complemented my training/racing was that it forced me to be aware of my upper body motion. Watch the pros race some time. You don't see them flailing their upper bodies around unless it's the heat of a sprint when anything goes. "Bobbing" while you ride is wasted energy; the effort should come from the waist down and maybe the arms and upper body while climbing out of the saddle. But otherwise the more relaxed and still your upper half, the better.
Your loosened backpack can be a reminder to keep still when you pedal.
