I agree about "feeling" the weight when it's way back behind me. Maybe a tranverse saddle bag has less of this 'cuz it's right under your butt & thighs, making it carry more like body weight? Obviously, once you stand up it's flag-poled weight. But since more than 95% of my commute is done sitting, maybe this is a better weight placement? I do go out on lunch rides with co-workers, so being able to take off the bag & not leave behind any racks or mounting eqpt is another plus.
