Your commute & mood sound similar to what I usually experience on mine. Yes, I've found the direct attachment of a pack to be a benefit if any evasive moves are required while commuting. I also have my straps fairly short, & this is why it interferes with my mirror. I've realized this in the past, but didn't want to lengthen the straps & chance having the pack move around at all. My latest pack (I've been using it about 3 yrs now) is more tall than wide, but I do pack it to keep it as flat as possible, with all the heaviest items as close to my body as possible. Even with the straps short, my Alien-sized noggin (& helmet) keeps it all out of the air stream. I agree with you, it's a great way to carry my stuff! And pretty darn convenient, too.
