According to the article I posted the link to they estimated the engine would cost them as much as a typical V-6 engine once it got into full production. That's cheaper than a hybrid powerplant, I'd guess.
You might be spot-on about the reliability issue, but I cynically suspect that the problem is that GM is looking to "bigger and better". They'd rather drop Australian V-6 engines into all their cars than use technology which makes their cars more efficient.
