Some engineers are waiting for a better solution. Right now the added costs are such that the breakeven point is well into the future. This is not a well known technology. When all of the batteries have to be refreshed, the owner may be deep in a hole again and a normal vehicle may have been a lower cost of owership. Until hybrid vehicle lowers the cost of ownership over the life of the vehicle, it has questionable merit and sales are then confined to those who do not understand this issur or are purchasing for a near religious experience.
And note that the hybrids do not have astounding efficiencies on the highway. In someways, diesel engine vehicles exceed the performance parameters of hybrids and the life cycle costs are well understood.
