Ethical question--reference for employment ...

Here's the situation. I recently got a phone call at work from an employer calling me because someone they interviewed put me down as a reference.
I am SHOCKED that this person put me down as a reference for a job. Here's why:
When I supervised this person, she told me that she could not work weekends or cover overnight shifts (which is part of her job description). When I told her that perhaps I need to find someone else to fill her position, she went over my head to my boss, who didn't really support me. She also obtained a note from a doctor stating that she had "weekend nocturnal epilepsy", and therefore, could not fulfill that part of her job description. Shortly after that, she moved to another position within the company (9-5 hours), and I was no longer her supervisor.
She did not talk to me at all about putting me down as a reference.
She was terminated from my company recently for sending emails (to another employee both using company computers) attacking and criticizing coworkers. When my boss told me about her termination, she also mentioned that I was mentioned in her emails.
There is a part of me that would like to call her perspective employer back and let them know about her personality, and especially her load-of-crap medical diagnosis of "weekend nocturnal epilepsy". And part of me just feels that I would be being mean because I really didn't like her--she was a negative person.
I know that references typically just want to get employment dates, etc., but I really don't get why she had me as a reference.
What do you all think?
Thanks.
Urby
