My wife and I have talked about post and beam kits (the ones from shelter-kit seem particularly interesting) but I'm not sure I'm creative enough to create a floor plan ex nihilo. There's a very common L-shaped farmhouse that's common all over the midwest and seems very appealing to me. It is simple and small. I grew up in a relatively large (3000sf with the basement finished) house and have lived in or owned small places since then. When I was working residental construction in the late 90's, anything that was then being sold for less than $200k (and thus was a "starter" home) was shoddily made. Corners weren't straight, lumber was warped, workers left trash in the walls, etc.
The larger houses we occasionally worked on were well put together (you could count on opposing walls being parallel, and corners to be at 90 degrees) but they generally seemed very inefficient in design - too many "great" rooms and 2 story foyers that served no purpose beyond cosmetic and would never be lived in (nothing drives a utility bill up like a vaulted ceiling...).
I guess what I'm really longing for is an old 20's style craftsman bungalow or 2 story with 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, a kitchen, dining room and livingroom. Aside from a basement to finish off, everything else seems extraneous.
Sorry - hope my opinion doesn't offend.
