and many builders will complete things to whatever level of completion you ask. That way you can get your '20s style craftsman bungalow (those *are* nice!) and if you budget or dollars or preference lead you to doing some of the work yourself then you are still pretty hands-on involved. But that way you have a floor plan and don't have to create one.
In the case of our cabin (24 x 36) we'll have the interior walls framed and will do the rest ourselves. The builder we're using does crisp work, so I know it will be square and walls will be parallel, then we'll have him back to do some of the finish work as he does some nice details that I can't replicate. He's fine with this.
Find a builder who can share your vision and ask his advice--make him a "partner" so he will be enthusiastic about the project.
There are a bunch of books on this stuff. Take an afternoon to peruse your local bookstore.
