...by installing things that are safe, fuel efficient, provide green energy, and do not waste energy, like:
-Solar power with proper roof orientation. Scott paterson was paid by California governement to do that (65 cents on the dollar).
-insulated windows that are also breakage resistant (safety thing)
-Wind power
-radiant heat
-radiant heat in sidewalk to eliminate shoveling
-water well heat exchange units that will diminish needs for heating and cooling water/house
-Well water for emergencies
-There are sme AWESOME pre-built housing components that are very airtight and will save on heat losses. These also amazingly speed up building and finishing times.
-Wood and hay burning stoves for winter, as you are looking for a farmland and those things are plentiful and cheap.
-Oil heat, as you can then use biodiesel. Also, oil does not explode, and gas leaks do.
You will get lifelong tax breaks for these things, especially energy generation. Then you can build on the theme and get hybrid cars that plug into the electricity you generate, to get you upwards of 70/gallon with the boost your electricity gives the car.
Use a general contractor, as if you don't, the builders who come will finish other jobs first and leave you for last on the list.
Build on high ground as flooding is becoming more of an occurance.
Buy and build only on the left side of 1 way roads, as snow plows will bury you in if you are on the right.
Find an area with a stream and generate hydro-electric power. You will make an investment, but it will pay several times over.
