blurred background, desireable for some shots, like portraits. If medium aperture is the widest a lens will go, then that kind of effect is just not available in the same way. I agree, a very fast zoom is heavier than the kit lens, which is pretty light in the case of the Nikon. I may just go with another very fast but fixed focal length lens and use my feet a little more. My biggest disappointment with the kit lens was the inability to shoot low light, despite being able to plug in a high ISO number with the push of a button; I did better with a fast lens and film in those situations. For bright light and outdoors, the kits are very sharp, high contrast and very flexible.
