I recently switched to manual focus Minolta. Best pictures I have ever taken! The camera (fairly recent X-9) with 50mm 1.7 lens was $40 delivered. The powerful GN 32 flash was $16 delivered. The 135mm 2.8 portrait lens was $12 delivered. I am blown away by the ease of use, the brightness and size of viewfinder and overall optical quality of this outfit. I am still trying to find a wide angle lens for it and then I will be set for a long time.
By far the biggest surprise was that I find it easier to focus manually than when I use an autofocus SLR. With manual focus I get far sharper pictures and everything happens significantly faster. I love it!
If you insist on digital SLR, I would go with Nikon D50.
