and in my opinion the D50 is just not a competitive alternative for a number of reasons. Image quality and handicapped features being the biggest issues.

Read reviews on Dpreview.com and study the comparison photos. The difference is pretty striking. The D50 basically has the same sensor as the D70, but the in-camera processing is tweaked for less noise but with the cost of more smudging and less sharp high ISO pictures. I also like the Canon lens lineup better, but that's just my subjective opinion of course.

Image quality, High ISO noise and light sensitivity are in my opinion all better on the XT compared to both the D50 and D70/D70s. But don't just take my word for it. Look here at the comparison shots at dpreview.com:
