Why I'll buy another Saab and not a Mazda..

I've been coming around here for some time..since I had a C900. I currently drive a base 1999 9-3.
My wife opted for a 2002 Madza Protege 5. It has been a very reliable hatch
back/wagon. No repairs of any components.. Its almost 4 years old and
paid for now.
I will not say my 9-3 has been perfect..no, I needed to pay for a headgasket and the SID is losing pixels again. Car runs and looks great though. I have a dealer, SAABNet (thanks) and independent for support.
The Mazda Protege despite being 100% reliable (and it will probably go
200,000 miles no problem) has one major flaw; fit and finish (rust).
Perhaps its just what I expect from a car; namely at less than 4 years
old the car should not have;
a.) Rust/paint bubbling up on the rear wheelwell edges.
b.) Lower plastic body skirt has rubbed away paint where it meets the body
and it is rusting.
c.) Window trim .bubbling and rusting
d.) Wheel paint (bubbling and flaking off)
And in general the slightest brush against the body results in not only
scratching the clear coat but exposing the primer. Of course, all the metal is prone denting.
My C900 did not rust like this in 4 years. I realize all this can be
fixed and there is wear and tear but it bugs me to no end. Mazda did not
stand behind any of the it. Amazing..they can manufacture cars with bodies
that last 3 years.
There are many aspects that make a car..reliability, performance, repair costs, etc.. As I drive my Saab I realize that a durable and rust resilient exterior is important to me. In that regard both my Saabs did
well.
