This is somewhat personal thing, but I can drive my 10 year old 9000 for 7 or 8 hours over both highway and through-the-woods twisties in fair weather and in near white-out blizzards and arrive relaxed and without aches. I'm not odd-sized--6'2" and 200 pounds, but I *do not* fit happily in Japanese cars. Someday they will figure out how to make good seats, learn about ergonomics and get rid of of the gee-whiz junk they clutter up their cars with.
I've done the identical route in large and small Toyotas, Mitusbishis, several Chrysler products, an Impala, an Olds Intrigue and found all except the Intrigue (of all things!) a step down in comfort and capability. I've done similar distances in numerous Tauruses and Nissan Altimas. They are good, but they are not at the same level of a Saab. (or an Audi, BMW or Mercedes, for thhat matter.)
Euro cars, Saabs included, are a lot about feel. I happen to like the feel of a Saab on the road--that's me. IMO, Japanese cars don't have a lot of road feel. Some sedans, like an Altima, corner OK, but they still lack road feel, especially when pushing the edge a bit. That, to me, makes them a yawn to drive.
If all you are doing is comparing features and price, and balancing that against your conception of reliability, then have fun in your Japanese cars. They may be a step or two above a Saab in terms of overall reliability, but they are still far behind in performance.
