you need to be happy to sit there while all the merging traffic zooms by you and you feel like you screwed yourself. if you wait till the end of the merge lane, zooming along, you will probably end up cutting someone off at the end of the lane as you dive in to avoid running out of road.
i'd say best plan is to merge about halfway along the merge lane, then as soon as you can safely do so move over to the left lane to leave the right open for more merging traffic. move back over to the right lane after you've cleared that particular on-ramp.
the reason the lady was probably pissed as all get out was you were "causing" her to lose the possible extra 5 car lengths she would have made and gotten ahead of other cars already in traffic. and there will ALWAYS be somebody who will try and eke every last inch or road out of the merge lane to be "ahead" in traffic.
just my thoughts, drive safe!
mark :-)
