To get onto Rock Island from the Iowa/Davenport side you can go over this relatively small bridge that has two opposing lanes feeding one lane onto the bridge. There is a sign saying to alternate...and it is remarkable how smoothly it works. Ha Ha...until it døesn't and some SOB doesn't want to take his turn and then often BOOM...head on.
Zipper-type merge on jammed InterStates don't usually result in head-ons, but the same problem occurs when people don't allow others to merge or in fact deliberately close up mergeable spaces between them and the car in front. These people should be flogged. But it won't happen.
Be careful and be generous out there!
