I live in DC/MD/VA and am very much aware of that merge.
Zipper time!!
Mosey on up and zipper in at the front if traffic is not moving or moving slowly.
If traffic is moving briskly I generally merge as soon as possible and then GTF over as far right as I need to go or keep left but keep up with traffic.
Same for accidents...often there is a warning sign on the BW of a lane blocked, like left lane blocked exit 27. It's stupid to move over to right of left hand land if traffic is heavy...stay in the left hand lane and move up to the front and zipper in at the accident or else every swinging richard will zoom by on your left and signla frantically to get in front at the end.
Of course if you drive a BMW or Porsche or even Mercedes everyone will think you're a dork and won't give an inch.
