I went all the way to the end of the merge lane, but no faster than the (barely crawling) other lane. I actually had to STOP in the merge lane, to keep going the same slow speed. I always thought that the long merge lane was because the interstate is high speed, and you need lots of room. But when the interstate is at a stand-still, literally, it seems like skipping to the end of the merge lane is like driving on the shoulder to cut in. I dunno. I suppose the real problem is that everyone has different ideas on what to do.
