There is no reason to dump a car that's 12 years old unless it is unreliable or consistently costing more per month than a new(er) one. Or you just get the jones for a new car.
It does depend on the make and model, but there are lots of cars out there that are old but still doing fine. I expect to get at least 150K-200K out of a car and generally run them into the ground, and we buy used or off-lease. Maintaining a decent car is almost always less expensive than buying another one, especially if you DIY most repairs.
I have a '96 and '95 9000's that only require normal maintenance outside of things that are "once or twice in the life of the car" things like water pumps, radiators. We had an '84 C900 that we bought new and ran for 20 years and it was very cost-effective.
