Mike's point on years 3-6 is excellent and something most people forget. It's real and we've seen it with off-lease cars we've bought. Doesn't make it a bad deal, it's just the way it works. I like buying the CPO car because, being a tightwad, the initial cost is less and the car is still warrantied. We do this for my wife's car which also winds up being the family car for most trips, etc. And we keep a car for a long time 7-10 years, 150-200K miles. We have friends who do the same and never dump a car with less than 200K on it, usually much more.
But the other thought Mike has, echoed by someone else, is buy a car for $5-10 when it has 80-90K on it and drive it for X years. Am doing that right now with my '96 9K: Got it at 90K and have put 50K on it. Just done normal maintenance (brakes, tires, filters) and wear out items (water pump, heater core, etc.) Been very reasonable to own and I do long trips on a regular basis. I can see hitting 200K in this car, no problem.
You have to get a good car that has been well-cared for, but IMO this is a very good way to own a car, assuming having the latest and greatest is not important.
