Depreciation is the single biggest expense when it come to owning a car. Buy a well cared for, well built car for $3-5K with about 100K and make repairs as needed. Even if you have to rebuild the engine or transmission at some point (typically 200K) what's the most you could spend? 3K? It pales in comparison to what you'd spend in depreciation on any of the other scenarios. Check out the C900 board which is chock-a-lock with people who own cars this way. Some of them have 300/400k on their cars. I've been doing this for years and I've never had to rebuild an engine or transmission and I've rarely ever been stranded with a car that wouldn't run. For peice of mind I rent a new car when ever I go on a long road trip.
