Most people are convicted by their own statements, whether in a traffic stop or something more serious. I make it a policy not to talk to cops, and not to cooperate with them beyond that which is required by the letter of the law. My attorney has a rights statement on the back of his business card which basically states that "my attorney has advised me not to answer questions or accusations, and that I will not answer questions or consent to a search without my attorney present."
If stopped, I present the above-referenced statement and required drivers' ID to the officer and refuse to discuss the case, referring him to my attorney for any questions, and of course remaining otherwise pleasant and non-confrontational. (If he/she objects, I simply ask "can anything that I say be used against me in a court of law?" The answer is, of course "yes," meaning that I am within my rights to say nothing.)
