Lots of companies that are "good" here use labor in 3rd world countries where conditions are pretty bad. But conditions that would give OSHA fits in the US may be business as usual elsewhere.
I realize that's not an excuse, and that I'm playing a bit of devil's advocate, but it does pose the question of what is the appropriate standard by which to judge how well a company treats its employees.
Should, for example, all companies limit hours to 40 per week? 1 hour lunch breaks? 15 minute breaks every 3 hours? Should overtime always be optional? What is the right amount of vacation time? In the US we think 2-3 weeks is OK, but in much of Europe 4-6 weeks is the norm. Then there's things like employee-paid healthcare, maternity leave, flex time, etc.
What is the minimum standard? And how does it relate to the local economy? I know people who won't shop at WalMart because they don't like its employment practices. But Wally's paychecks are supporting a lot households in this country. So how does one decide?
I don't mean to harass you, just pushing the discussion, which is harder to do virtually than face to face.
