In some instances unions are a good thing. Certainly when they first came about they served a real purpose and were very valuable. But one needs to look no further than the UAW to see that unions can also have a negative impact on companies. Of course, this is a management issue, too, and management doesn't always do a good job of working with unions.
Unions can also shoot themselves in the foot with greed and a sense of entitlement. I've had a union steward tell a client and me that we had to stop erecting a simple trade show booth until a union dude could come over to help. All we needed was a step ladder and a wrench. And we had the wrench. So we spent 4 hours waiting for some weenie to show up to "help" for 2 minutes. That's hardly unusual. IMHO, unions have largely outlived their usefulness.
OTOH, a well-run company doesn't need unions. The Asian automakers with plants in the US are all (I think) running without the "benefit" of UAW labor and seem to be doing just fine.
