In the white collar world, on allows oneself to be overworked. Toyota is not an evil company (unless you happen to work for one of the big 3 and drink a lot of Koolaid) - they simply expect more from their workers. They seem to be getting more productivity from their engineers than their US-based counterparts, if your post is any indication.
