when electronics started to become common on cars everyone was scared that nobody but the dealer would ever be able to fix them. The dealers would then charge outrageous fees to maintain 10 year old cars, which were worth approximately nothing, so basically sound cars would get junked. It's kind of funny, but the first car I remember reading a real scare story on future repairs was the 9000 with Direct Ignition, around 1990. I think what Anders said about a trend towards independents who specialize in one or two makes is what will happen, which I really think is a good thing for everyone. Most makes/models have the same inherent faults that go wrong in each and every one of them (I'm thinking DI cassettes, heater cores, bpc valves, etc on 9000s...) if a guy specializes in one make, he will quickly identify the likely culprits on any car, thus saving himself the frustration of endless troubleshooting, and saving the customer hours of diagnostic time. He will likely even fix the problem faster once he's done a few of them. There are so many vehicles on the road it's not possible for one person to know all or even a fraction of them well.
